My identical twin sister and I were born 3 months premature weighing 2lbs 6 ounces. Lack of oxygen caused a grade 4 bilateral brain bleed. I had cardiac arrests and multiple lung collapses. I have Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus. I was on life support in the NICU for my first two weeks of life. Everyone thought we'd die. . My sister did. I have a shunt inside my brain for my hydrocephalus . I survived when no one thought I would. This is my story

Poem for Blogging Against Disableism Day 2013
I'm me, What Do You See?
A person with cerebral palsy hydrocephalus and glasses. wheelchair user
So many questions and answers that people want
What happened to you?
What is cerebral palsy? What is hydrocephalus ?
And their fears: is it catching?
Their curiosity: how do you do X Y and Z
Their ignorance: hydrocephalus can't be that serious you can't see it. Your glasses must correct your vision really well.
Little do they know, I'm lucky to be alive as hydrocephalus can kill if not treated properly. My glasses help me see as well as I can but I'm registered blind.
Many experiences: good and bad,
being misunderstood
treated with indifference
Ignored
Bullied
Laughed at because of my startle reflex
Treated nicely and with yet more indifference by those close to me and health professionals
I'm me, what do you see?
Chatty
kind
friendly
confident
unique
hard-working
persevering
wanting acceptance
A person who values people
Talented
Determined
Have good times and bad
I'm me, what do you see?
If you don't see anything else please see me for who I am and not for my disabilities. They do NOTdefine me
